Locked Out - A Tale of Woe and Terror

Remember how my car broke? And I was driving my grandmother's car? Well, I locked myself out of it last night, while it was running and Maren was strapped in. We answered an interesting question last night, though. How many Baptists does it take to break into a car. Apparently the answer is one - the one who goes home to get the spare.

At the end of the day, Maren was freaked out, but I don't think she really understood what was going on. She was upset that everyone was standing around and she was stuck in the car. After we got home and read stories she was fine, slept through the night without incident, yadda, yadda.

This morning we were all tired and I just threw comfy clothes at Brynna, knowing it was going to be a rough day for everyone. I tossed her a pair of slightly too-small sweatpants and a pink, sparkly Hannah Montana t-shirt. When the whining about hair brushing started, I shrugged and told her it wasn't that bad and I thought she'd be okay for one day. Why did I do that? Because I am terrible at consistency. I suck at setting a rule and sticking to it. I am not a morning person. I didn't know it was picture day.

It's been a rough couple of days around the Scattered Household. So, I'm asking for your help. What I really need is a big ole parenting win. Something that makes me feel like I might not suck at this gig. But, I'm just gonna have to wait for that to come along. In the meantime, help me out by sharing your parenting fails. Seriously. My ego needs you.

Some memorable parenting fails:

Shortly before my mom died, I was moving stuff out of her house in the country and setting up house in a place in town (in hopes she could postpone living her last days in a nursing home). Because my station wagon was full to the gills, I had Jamie in his car seat in the front of the car. I got out of the car, at which time he promptly kicked the door - his foot landing square on the door lock button and locking me out of the car. At the time, I worked as a reporter for our hometown newspaper. I spoke with firefighters and police on a daily basis. When they responded to my "child locked in a running car in the middle of cold weather" call, they laughed. And kept laughing at me for MONTHS afterward.

I have more parenting fail stories, but I won't hijack your blog to tell them. I might use them as my Friday Five tomorrow.

I let my son walk around for 5 (yes FIVE) YEARS with the bone in his broken in two pieces. (Yes, it required surgery, and then another procedure to get it fixed - and it's still not totally right!).

You can't top that one....unfortunately!

That's true. And Grandma left one of you in the house and went to town, so maybe it's in my genes.

lol picture day!
and Jenn-Jenn lol your story!

You so do NOT suck at this gig. My kids have been watching TV for hours and I'm not making them stop. They've been pretty sick this week, and we're home today so they can keep recovering but they're finally not THAT sick, so I should't allow the TV but I am. If I hear one more episode of Curious George I might lose my s**t, though.

My worst parenting fail recently was coming inside after shoveling snow and finding Daniel about to pull the entire microwave off the top of hte fridge and onto his head because he was trying to make his own cocoa.

Oh Suze, if you knew how much TV my kids watch!

I'm so glad you got there in time, that could have been disasterous! Thanks for making me feel better.
