Five Things on Friday - Little Happies Edition

I'm giving up on Friday Memes. Because no one sends me memes anymore. I can only assume it's because you all hate Friday Memes and have decided to never pass one on to me again. I have ignored this situation as long as I can. It's time for a new Friday feature. Yes, I know, I have a Monday feature that I ignore more than do, but whatevs. New Friday feature. Because I can't be trusted to think on Fridays.

Five Things on Friday will be a weekly list of five things. Subject to be determined by me, but feel free to make suggestions in the comments. I will list my five things and then open the comments up to you, my loyal followers, readers, fans, groupies, what have you. Please respond. Or else, I'll feel all alone in the Earth. It'll be bad. Really.

Five Little Happies
Little happies are the tiny things that make you happy. No, "my baby's laugh," because that's not little, that's big. Another human life that sprung from your loins big, so don't pretend it's little. This is the genuinely little stuff that makes you disproportionally happy.

1. New Books - There is little on this planet more satisfying to me than a brand, spanking new book. With that new book smell and those crisp, unstained, unwrinkled, un-dog-eared pages. Not to mention the new world that is about to unfold. I'm sorry, have I never mentioned I was a lit major?

2. Showers - Very hot, melt the paint off the walls, good strong water pressure, medium to hard water, smelly-good soap showers. Not a bath person, me.

3. The Doctor Who theme song - Since the song has no words, I can only imagine that the reaction is Pavlovian, but recently I downloaded it as a ringtone and set it as the ringtone for all of my doctors. (Yes, I have many, I'm old, shut it.) Now, I can't wait for a doctor to call me. But when they do, I don't want to answer because I don't want to make the song quit playing. It's a thing.

4. Shoes - Yeah, I'm a girl. I love to shop for shoes, browse shoes, shoe watch at the mall, read about shoes. I hate to wear shoes and am barefoot more than shod, but I still love shoes. Any kind.

5. Teen movies - Dazed and Confused is my favorite, but I also love Pretty in Pink, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Breakfast Club, Varsity Blues, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, 10 Things I Hate About You, Can't Hardly Wait and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. If it is aimed as disillusioned, outcasts between 14 and 17, I'm in. Sad, but true.

Okay, so there you have it. Five little happies. Share 1 or 3 or 5 or 7 with me. No even numbers need apply, apparently.

I'm commenting on your happies.

1. I had a student who told her mom when she opened a new book and heard it crackle, "I love that sound." And she couldn't even read yet. What a future.

2. I only like baths if they are followed by showers and also include a book. I really like the "milk" bath products, available at Kroger and Walmart, among other places.

3. I haven't seen that show, but my best friend from college checks her laptop frequently when she visits me to see if the next episode is available yet. I don't know what that means. I just know she loves it, too.

no real comments on 4 or 5.

And a happy, so I'm complying with your request: 1. hugs. This qualifies because I'm in my thirties, right? And not elderly or in preschool?

I am right there with you on the books. Jamie made me fantastically happy when he gave me a brand spanking new young adult fantasy book (first part of a new series) for mother's day. My kid knows me, obviously.

My other major little happy? Solitude. Whether it's five minutes or five hours, I lurve me some peace and quiet. I use this time to read said new books. I guess I don't play well with others. LOL

Mmm, I like this. Rather than leave a real comment, I think I'll just post one myself!

Mrs. A - I always take a shower as soon as I'm done in the bath, if for some reason, I take a bath. I take a really hot bath sometimes when my back is bothering me and I did a lot when I was pregnant, just because I hated to stand long enough for a shower. I really hated being pregnant.

Jenn - I thought about including solitude, because I certainly feel the same way, but I wasn't sure you could call that disproportionate. Since I so seldom get it.

Suze - lookin' forward to it.

This is tough if I am to exclude the little stuff to do with my kids. But...
1 As I cycle home from work and turn off tarmac onto the grit track by the river, the sound of the grit under the wheels is just so pleasing, probably because I love riding off-road and that stretch (which is downhill) is so pleasant.
2. Hearing a good "new" song. When I first heard the Glee cover of Don't Stop Believing I played it to death.
3. Finding an app for my fancy new phone. (Such a geek!)
4. Seeing a weather forecast that suggests it might be sunny at the weekend.
Finally and obviously
5 Seeing someone has commented on a blog post!

Steve, I just discovered Glee. You're totally right about the Journey cover!

And I just posted my list :)

Steve - Concur on songs and comments. I have been thinking lately how very much I would like to have a bike again. I haven't had one since I was a teenager, and I'm not sure how well I could ride in my hilly landscape, but every time I see someone riding for fun (as opposed to distance or race riding, which doesn't look even a little fun to me) I am filled with envy.

1. I love that new book smell, sound, and feel. I also love any used book that's new to me. I always think gee I wonder who owned, borrowed, read this before me? Yep book geek is me and I'm proud!!
2. I'm a bath girl--but one day I want a lock that I only have the key to, a fancy stereo piping in music and soundproof walls. Or AKA my own bathroom.
3. I love the Dr. and I love talking to other fans about the Dr. and then hearing non-fans be like Dr. Who?? No just the Dr.
4. Hair products--even though my hair has looked roughly the same for the past 15 years--the length may vary. I love buying new products whether it's shampoo, mousse or some fancy brush or other tool to basically try and make my morning routine quicker and have pretty hair.
5. Having the house to myself. I want to lay on the couch, eat junk food, watch chick movies and cry, take a nap and read my books all day.

This is not a little happie but rather a small saddie.

Your picture makes me depressed knowing that no matter how unlikely it is for me to ever having a successful acting career, in the off chance that I am ever "discovered", I will never be able to wear a "Trust me. I'm a Doctor" t-shirt and have it be true. Being able to pull that off has got to be one of the coolest things in the entire universe.

If only I had been born British?

Anony - A key to the bathroom sounds delightful. I wonder where I could procure such magic.

Strageite - So very true. However, you could start vying to be a companion. Has there ever been an American companion?
